New Space-Rated Motor Drive Series

Bohemia, New York
Data Device Corporation of Bohemia, New York, announces the introduction of its new Space-Rated Motor Drive Series the PWR-82520R Space Motor Drive. The Space-520R Motor Drive is 100k-rad tolerant and SEU immune to 36 mev. The Space-520 is intended to drive 3-phase brushless dc motors and is available in 3 current ratings (1 amp, 3 amp, and 10 amp) all rated at 100 volts.

The Space-520 is a completely self-contained 3-phase torque controller containing the command amplifiers, pulse width modulator (PWM), commutation control, tachometer, current sense amplifier, gate drive, and power MOSFET drive stage. The Space-520 uses a unique control technique called 4-quadrant complementary control, which provides excellent current linearity (3%) and current regulating accuracy of 5% while maintaining holding torque over the input range even at zero (null) commanded input. This type of control eliminates the "zero input dead band" that is common with most switching techniques while maintaining complete loop control.

All models within the family have the same operating characteristics but are optimized for its rated current. The command amplifier has programmable gain and compensation to enable the user to match the loop performance to the system and motor. The internal PWM is adjustable and can switch from 10-100Khz for operation with low inductance motors. The 3-phase drive is commutated from hall sensors located in the motor. The tachometer signal is also derived from the hall sensors. The gate drive is optimized for radiation performance and noise immunity while providing a controlled signal to the rad-hard MOSFET output stage. The Space-520 is optimized for minimal quiescent power through the use of programmable power supplies. The PWR-82520R1/R3 comes in a 41-pin plug-in or surface mount package and the PWR-82520R10 comes in a 43-pin surface mount package.

The high reliability and flexibility of these drives make them particularly suitable for commercial and military space applications, including:
  • Antenna and solar array positioning
  • Reaction and momentum wheels
  • Pump motors for fuel and fluid control
  • Fan and compressor motors for environmental control systems
  • Radar positioning
  • Thrust vector control
